Virginia (Ginny) Ruth Slack

January 23, 1952 — March 16, 2016

Virginia (Ginny) Slack left us on March 16, 2016 after a very brief illness. She was born in 1952, and spent almost her whole life in Decatur and Atlanta, surviving Hodgkin's Disease in her 20's and two later bouts with breast cancer. She continued volunteering and tax work until two days before her passing from her weakened heart. She was a charter member of North Decatur Presbyterian Church (NDPC), started singing alto in the church choir at age 16, and never stopped. Singing and reading were her passions. Ginny earned her BA from Wesleyan College and eventually settled into tax work, becoming an expert for H & R Block's Executive Tax Service, where she gathered loyal clients who became dear friends that stayed with her as an independent tax preparer (or "tax wizard" in the words of one client). With a deep desire to be of service to others, she spent almost every day as a caring volunteer somewhere; at Villa International (where she also served on the Board); the Southeastern Railway Museum; Traveler's Aid at Hartsfield-Jackson; Atlanta History Center; Georgia Appalachian Trail Club; the Martin Luther King National Historic Site; Camp Toccoa; Initiatives for Affordable Housing; and way too many other organizations to count. She shared constantly, especially her needlework and knitting, and from her reading. She was predeceased by her parents, Searcy B. Slack, Jr. and Arline Taylor Slack, and survived by her brothers, Gordon (Anne) of Estes Park CO; Bill (Pat) of LaFayette, GA; and Henry (Ellen) of Decatur, as well as seven nieces and nephews, four grand-nieces, and a full dozen cousins, especially Mary Ellen Morse Pendergrast, her dearest friend. A Memorial Service will be held at NDPC on Sunday, April 10, at 3 o'clock, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the North Decatur Presbyterian Capitol Fund, 611 Medlock Road, Decatur GA 30030; or to Villa International, 1749 Clifton Road NE, Atlanta GA 30329.
