Virginia L. Kornegay

Virginia Lee Kornegay January 27, 1926 – March 3, 2019
Virginia Lee Kornegay passed away on March 3, 2019. She had recently celebrated her 93rd birthday in January.
In her own words, “I had a good life.”
V, one of the increasingly rare native Atlantans, lived in the same intown neighborhood and in the same house for the majority of her life. She had many wonderful neighbors over the years, some of whom were lifelong friends.
She attended Morningside Elementary, O’Keefe Middle, Girls’ High and Georgia Institute of Technology's "Evening School of Commerce” (now Georgia State University.)
She was fiercely independent, self-sufficent, and resourceful in taking care of her family.
She loved reading and learning; her natural curiosity always had her researching new information. She inherited her father’s talent for photography. Focusing on film photography, she took classes to hone her skills, resulting in photos that captured many memorable moments. In her 90s, she learned how to use a tablet for searching the internet. She was sharp as a tack and enjoyed keeping up with the news and trends to stay current.
For fun, she was always up to something and stayed informed about upcoming events around town. During the 1970’s, she held season tickets to the Atlanta Flames hockey team’s games and traveled extensively with their fan club.
She loved to refinish furniture and turned her garage into a workshop. She took pride in making old, beloved pieces of furniture look new again.
After retirement, she volunteered at the Atlanta Zoo and worked in the dietary kitchen. At that time, Willie B was the star gorilla and a favorite of hers. She made sure he got some of the biggest and best pieces of fruit and vegtables.
She always enjoyed socializing and dining out at restaurants with family and friends. Her signature dish to share at gatherings was stuffed celery, an old Southern favorite. She prided herself on her pie crusts which were always perfect: her cherry and lemon meringue pies were outstanding.
She is survived by her three children and sons-in-law: Nancy Kornegay and Tim Bigelow; Mike Kornegay; Karen and John Devendorf; her granddaughter, Emma Devendorf; and her brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Gail Lee. She also leaves behind nieces and cousins.
A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held in the near future.
