THOMPSON, Virginia Sue
Virginia Sue Thompson of Kennesaw died peacefully at Metropolitan Hospice in East Cobb on December 18, 2009, of renal failure after lung surgery. She was eighty three. A life-long Christian, Virginia was a member of Woodstock United Methodist Church and a past member of Oak Grove UMC. She was born in Tampa, FL, and was preceded in death by her mother, Elsie Johnson Miller; father, Luther Grose Miller; and husband, Lawson Thompson, Jr. She is survived by her sons, Randall, John, and Lawson III; and beloved daughter-in-law, Sylvia, Lawson’s wife. Other survivors include sisters-in-law, Jane Skogstad (Sam), Dallas, TX, Virginia Hanson (Tom), Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, and Margie Lawler (late Robert), Atlanta. She has two grandsons, David and Forrest Thompson IV. The paradigm of a great Southern lady, “Sue” was soft-spoken and gracious, but was also a hard worker. She was a homemaker, part-time federal employee, real estate agent with Walter Scott Realty, and past president of the Decatur Junior Women’s Club and of the Briarcliff Woods Garden Club. She assisted her husband, a builder, in decorating homes, and taught Sunday school at both churches for many years. A world traveler, she visited over forty states, Canada and Europe, but still found the means to contribute generously to the United Methodist Children’s Home, MUST Ministries, and other worthy causes. Sue was twice a cancer survivor, and had suffered many years from arthritis, but never let her ailments slow her down. She entertained regularly, read voraciously, and was a member of the Cherokee Book Club and two bridge groups. She could work the New York Times crossword puzzle using a pen. Of all her qualities however, those most remembered by her friends and loved ones will be her kindness and consideration toward others. Although arthritis cramped her writing, she kept alive the Southern tradition of handwritten notes to the ill, those celebrating birthdays, and others who needed encouragement. Perhaps most typical of her selflessness is her arranging from hospice for flowers for her daughter-in-law’s birthday, delivered to Sylvia’s office on Friday, the day Virginia passed away. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 22, at 1:00 pm in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons. Rev. Lewis Miller and Rev. Claude Herbert will officiate. Interment will be at Floral Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Monday evening at A. S. Turner & Sons.
