Virginia Powell Lynch was born March 27, 1920, in Lax, West Virginia. She was one of 14 children. Her father, Fred Powell, was a coal miner. Her mother, Nettie Mae Powell, was a stay at home mother. Seven of Virginia’s siblings died before adulthood.
At the age of ten, Virginia accepted Jesus as her Savior at the Huntington Citadel Corps. During a Youth Councils weekend, Ginny responded to God’s Call to be a Salvation Army officer.
She entered the Salvation Army Southern Territory’s Training College in 1940, graduating in May of 1941. Ginny met Howard Lynch at the Norfolk VA Corps, and they were married in 1947. They were commissioned Salvation Army officers in May of 1950. Appointments were in Princeton WV; Charlottesville, VA; The Salvation Army Officer Training College, Atlanta, GA; Divisional Youth Secretary in GA and Maryland and West Virginia; Atlanta Temple Corps, Atlanta GA; Montgomery, AL; Anniston, AL; Shreveport, LA; and they retired from Lakeland, FL. in 1988.
They moved to their home in Cumming, GA, on Lake Lanier, where they enjoyed their retirement for twenty years. Howard Lynch was Promoted to Glory on July13, 2007. Ginny was Promoted to Glory November 27, 2017.
Howard and Virginia are survived by their children: Becky Lynch Curnow and her husband, Paul Curnow, Suwanee, GA; Joe Lynch, Gainesville, GA; and Steve Lynch and his wife, Patty Lynch, Birmingham, AL. They are also survived by their three granddaughters: Kelley Grunewald and her husband, Ivan Grunewald, Gainesville, GA; Kerrey Lynch, Alexandria, VA; and Stephanie Johnson and her husband, Adam Johnson, USA Military, Germany.
The family will receive friends at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, November 30 at A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 30 at Westview Cemetery, Atlanta, GA.
