W. Lamar Mcdaniel

June 19, 1924 — August 22, 2012

W. Lamar McDaniel, 88, of Tucker, passed away on Wednesday, August 22, 2012. He was born in Atlanta on June 19, 1924 to John B. McDaniel and Lila Pace McDaniel. Lamar loved his country and served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 until 1946 aboard the USS Portland in the South Pacific. He won the soap box derby in Atlanta in 1938, and went on to the National Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio, where he came in fifth place. Lamar served on the Atlanta Fire Department from the late 1940's until his retirement in 1979, where he achieved the rank of Captain and Acting Battalion Chief. Lamar was an active member of his church, Scott Boulevard Baptist Church, for over 40 years. Lamar was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha McDaniel and his second wife, Helen Weldon McDaniel. Lamar is survived by his loving wife, Sara Roberts McDaniel; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Glenda McDaniel; daughter and son-in-law Melody and David Rucker; grandchildren, Stephen McDaniel and Elisa Anderson and her husband Erik; great grandchildren, Lauren, Elena, Asher and Martha McDaniel, as well as Erik Anderson Jr., and Jordan Anderson; nephews Chris and Scott Miller; niece Holly Miller. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 25, at 11:00 AM, in the chapel of A.S. Turner and Sons, with Rev. Greg Smith and Rev. Mike Roper officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The American Heart Association. Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 24, from 5:00-8:00 PM and again on Saturday from 9:00-11:00 AM at A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
