Wallace Dean Wilcox passed away April 10, 2024 at the age of 87. Dean was born in Billings, MT on April 4, 1937, the eldest child to Rena Mae (née, Ramspeck) and Clyde Emil "Bill" Wilcox, Jr.. Dean graduated from Billings Senior High in 1955, and attended undergraduate studies at the University of Montana and the University of Utah, where he also graduated from medical school. Dean and MaryKay Fallon were married at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Billings, MT on March 28, 1957. They were married for 62 years, and had five children. Dean joined the Public Health Service after medical school, and served as a pediatrician on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. He later moved his family home to Billings, where he enjoyed a successful private practice.
Following a residency in Cardiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, Dean joined the faculty of Emory University Medical School, Department of Pediatrics, in 1980. Dr. Wilcox mentored many residents at Emory and Grady Hospitals, many of whom remain in touch. Following retirement, Dean enjoyed grandchildren, gardening, painting, travel, and spending time on the banks of the Stillwater River. Dean was especially beloved by all that knew him. We all benefited from his guidance and wisdom, and from his nurturing spirit.
Dean is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, MaryKay, and his grandson, Sam Ginsburg. He is survived by his partner, Dorothy Cunningham, by his sister, Dixie Bertagna of Billings, MT, and by his five children: Andy Wilcox of Anchorage AK; Jaye Wilcox of Billings, MT; Mike Wilcox (Janey) of Atlanta, GA; Ben Wilcox (Rebecca) of Atlanta, GA; Sarah Wilcox (David Ginsburg) of Atlanta, GA. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Whitney Urbatsch (Matt), Chance Wilcox (Jay), Collin Wilcox, Jamie Ginsburg (Aliyah Shikany), Maggie Beike (Ryan), Dean Wilcox, Owen Ginsburg, and by a great grandson, Gabriel Urbatsch.
A graveside service will be held Friday, April 19, 2024 at 3:00pm at Honeycreek Woodlands,
2625 GA-212, Conyers, GA 30094.
