Walter Frederick Vaughan, 74, of Decatur, Georgia passed away at home on August 8, 2021. Walter was preceded in death by his son, David Vaughan, and his wife, Virginia Newsome Vaughan. Walter is survived by his daughter, Becky Vaughan (Decatur, GA), his brothers Frank Vaughan (Hixson, Tennessee) and George Vaughan (Half Moon Bay, California), and his sisters, Linda Carter (Decatur, Georgia) and Carole Luther (Rome, Georgia). Walter was born on April 10, 1947, in Atlanta, Georgia and grew up mostly in Rome, Georgia, where he was a star football player and the middle of five siblings. He moved back to Atlanta in 1967 and spent almost thirty years in retail sales and management for Rich’s/Macy’s and Nordstrom. Walter met his wife, Virginia, through Decatur First Methodist Church, they were married there in 1971, and he was a faithful congregant until his death. Mr. Vaughan was a true community servant, and he spent his life showing his love for the Decatur community through his volunteer work. He was an involved PTA parent when his children attended Glenwood Elementary, Renfroe Middle, and Decatur High Schools, organizing spaghetti fundraisers, chaperoning field trips, and running the concession stand for the Booster Club. He also volunteered for the Girls Scouts of America and the DeKalb Rape Crisis Center for many years. At the time of his passing, Walter was the first person to sign up for church meal trains or food drives, preparing warm meals for those celebrating or mourning life events and gathering food for families in need. Walter also volunteered actively with the Side-by-Side Brain Injury Clubhouse in Stone Mountain, Georgia in his retirement years, finding true joy and a second family there. Aside from being a connoisseur of bluegrass, barbeque, and football, Walter will be remembered by his family and community as a friend to all, a jovial soul, and the very best kind of Christian man. Visitation is Friday, August 20th from 6-8pm at A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home. Funeral service is Saturday, August 21st, 11am at Decatur First United Methodist Church.
