Ms. Wanda Garrett, 65, of Atlanta died Friday, November 10, 2011. Wanda was the only child of Roy and Jewell Stucky Garrett and was born and educated in Macon, GA. Wanda received her B.S. from the Women’s College of GA, her M.A. from Atlanta University, and her Ed. S. from Emory University. Wanda began her teaching career at the Southwest DeKalb High School. At Lakeside High School she taught biology, and Advanced Placement Biology, and served as Science Department Chair. She sponsored several clubs, including National Honor Society.
She had been a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a sorority of women educators. Wanda received many awards throughout her teaching career; 1966 Beta Beta Beta Biology Honor Society awarded her membership in the Kappa Gamma chapter; 1980: National Association of Biology Teachers awarded her the Outstanding Biology Award; 1994-1995; Coke Cola Educator of the year for Lakeside High School, DeKalb County High Teacher of the Year; 1996: Who’s Who Among Teachers; 1999. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution awarded her for exceptional achievements. An accomplished pianist, Wanda played for several churches in the metro Atlanta area. Wanda is survived by cousins; Rita Youngblood, Mark and Candy Garrett, and Ann Tribble, and a “family” of special friends including Phyrell Mills, Ava Spinks, Jackie Hill, and Charle Anne Sher, and many others. Funeral service will be held 4 P.M. Sunday, November 12, 2011 at A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home. Burial will be held Monday, November 14, 2011 at Glen Haven Cemetery in Macon, GA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Susan B. Komen Cancer Foundation, P. O. Box 650309 Dallas, TX 75265-0309. Friends are invited to visit with the family one hour prior to the services at A.S. Turner & Sons. Wanda was a child of God, she lovingly touched the lives of friends, colleagues, and students.
