Wilfred Herman Hester passed away on Sunday, September 12, 2010. Mr.
Hester was born in Mathiston, Mississippi on November 22, 1916. He attended
Wood Junior Academy and went on to Mississippi State University where he
graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering. In 1943 he joined the Army Air
Corps and served as a First Lieutenant. He was stationed in the Pacific on the
Island of Saipan, was a flight engineer on B-29s flying missions over Japan, and
received the Distinguished Flying Cross. On August 16, 1945, having returned
from the war, he married Doris Lang. They moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee
where he worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority. After a brief return to
Mississippi, they settled in Decatur, Georgia where he worked for Robert and
Company. He and his wife moved to Tucker, Georgia in 1986 and he finished his
engineering career with Hayes, James and Associates in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and all who
knew him considered him kind, thoughtful and a true gentleman. Mr. Hester is
survived by his wife of 65 years, Doris Lang Hester, his daughter, Helen Hester
Pirkle and son-in-law, James L. Pirkle; grandchildren, James L. Pirkle, Jr. and wife Stephanie; Kathryn P. Harrell and husband Todd, Stephen L. Pirkle, and
Leslie P. Yates and husband Matt. He was blessed with the arrival of two great grandchildren, James Maddox Pirkle, and Olivia Leigh Harrell. All will miss him. Graveside service will be held on Thursday, September 16th, 11:00 AM, at Floral
Hills Memory Gardens, Tucker, Georgia. A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home,
Decatur, Georgia.
