William (Bill) Canterbury March 26, 1922 - August 25, 2013
Always the Southern Gentleman, William Andrew Canterbury was known as Bill to the many friends he made wherever he went. He was a generous, loving and kind man who always had time to lend a helping hand or share a story. He was champion for the underdog; always ready to stand up against injustice whether it was supporting the cause of civil rights in Alabama or the rights of residents at the assisted living home. Bill loved to read and was an outstanding gardener.
Born in Sylacauga, Alabama, to Lois and William Canterbury, Bill spent most of his early years living with his Aunt Evie and Uncle Oscar Freeman in Monroe, Louisiana. He had four sisters: Beth, Dorothy, Mildred, and Evelyn.
Bill enlisted in the US Army Air Corp during World War II and later served in the US Army Corp of Engineers in Germany as a part of the Marshall Plan rebuilding.
In 1945, he married the love of his life, Jeremae Newman, and they had four children. They made a home in Florence, Alabama, where Bill worked in many different jobs mostly as a salesman. After the passing of his wife in 1976, Bill moved to the Atlanta area.
Bill lived his final years at Medlock Gardens in Decatur and passed away peacefully Sunday morning at the age of 91. He was a loving father to William Andrew Canterbury II, Thomas Canterbury (Margaret), Jeanine Canterbury Calia (Christopher), and Cynthia Louise Canterbury. He was grandfather to Jesse Canterbury (Hana) and Nathan Andrew Calia. He has one great grandchild, Henry Canterbury. Among his many nieces and nephews, Joe Miller was like another son to him and was with him at his death.
