William Dudley Mcgarity, Sr.

Born in Jersey, GA to Joseph Hugh McGarity and Lucille Meador McGarity, Dudley and his family moved to Clarkston, GA in 1937. He was a graduate of Decatur Boys High and Georgia State University, and spent his professional career with Standard Federal Savings and Loan (later known as Anchor Bank) in Atlanta. In 1957, he married Helen Rounelle Housworth of Lithonia, who preceded him in death in 1986. A lifelong outdoorsman, his passions were hunting, fishing, and good quail dogs, but even more important to him were the many friends with whom he shared the outdoor experience over many years. He was a founding member of Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church in Stone Mountain in the early 1960s, where he remained an active member for the rest of his life. Dudley remarried in 1996 to Sarah "Kitty" Maddox of Stone Mountain and immediately became a member of a new and much larger family, to all of whom he became a kind, giving, and loving influence in their lives. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Todd McGarity; son, William Dudley McGarity, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Stephanie McGarity; stepchildren, Jerry Todd, David Cantrell, Katrina Slayton, Pam Marquis, Stephanie Williams, Truett Maddox, Shane Maddox; and ten grandchildren; all of metro-Atlanta. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 26 at A. S. Turner & Sons in Decatur, with visitation beginning at 12:00 p.m. A graveside service is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Smyrna Presbyterian Church in Conyers, GA.
