William Harrison Bridges

July 24, 1934 — April 15, 2017

William "Bill" Harrison Bridges, 82, of Atlanta, passed away Saturday, April 15, 2017. Born on the family farm near Lexington, Georgia, July 24, 1934, he was the son of the late James Ed and Dora Elease Paul Bridges.

Bill graduated from Oglethorpe County High School, Arnoldsville, Georgia, in 1952. He volunteered for the U.S. Navy and was inducted on October 21, 1953, where he attained the rank of Hospitalman Second Class. Bill was temporarily transferred to the U.S. Marine Corps in the summer of 1955 where he served as a hospital corpsman. He was honorably discharged from active duty on September 27, 1957, after serving in California and Okinawa, Japan.

He married his wife, Sybil Turmon Bridges on December 24, 1959, and moved to Athens, Georgia, where their son, Byron David, was born in 1960. The family moved to Atlanta in 1966, and he resided there until his passing.

After 17 years in other positions, Bill secured computer programming training in 1966 and began as a computer programmer during the early years of mainframe computing growth. Then in 1970, he joined Honeywell Bull, Inc. in their mainframe computer division as a systems analyst until his retirement in 1993. After he retired, he worked as a consultant with Shaw Industries in Dalton, Georgia, until 2002.

Bill was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing with his son, as well as gardening and traveling. He was a member at Berkley Hills Country Club for many years. Most of his retirement years were spent with his beloved grandson Justin. Bill felt that his most important accomplishments were serving his country in the U.S. Navy and being a loving husband, father and grandfather.

William Harrison Bridges is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sybil Turmon Bridges; son, Byron David Bridges and his wife, Karin Hoherchak Bridges; grandson, Justin Alexander Bridges, all of Atlanta; sister, Deborah Bridges Price, of Monroe, Georgia; and many more loving family and friends.

A celebration of Bill's life will be held from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Saturday, May 13, 2017, in The Great Room at Central DeKalb Senior Center, 1346 McConnell Drive, Decatur, Georgia 30033.
