William M. “RED” Murphey died Tuesday April 3, 2018. He married Sidney Allen Murphey June 30, 1961. Red was born April 2, 1935 at Emory Hospital and lived in Avondale Estates in his family home his entire life. He was born to Lyman Case Murphey & Marie Fladger Murphey. Red lost his father at 10 years old to Cancer & brother (Lyman C. Murphey Jr.) at 14 years old to an automobile accident. Red & Sidney had two wonderful children, Marshall Murphey of Avondale Estates & wife Ansley Davis and Michael L Murphey of Athens, GA & wife Lydia Woodham. He had 5 grandchildren; Madeline, Candler, Liam, Emma & McKenna. Red had a very short illness and was surrounded by his family & friends throughout his illness. Red was a 1953 Graduate of Decatur High School and went on to Graduate from the University of Georgia in 1957 where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Following college, he went on to have a career in the insurance business working as an independent agent in Property / Casualty. After 54 years in the business, he retired in 2011 where he was able to celebrate with his two sons by being treated to a full day of golf at the Augusta National Golf Course. Red enjoyed golf with his family & friends. Amongst his many enjoyments in life, he was particularly fond of his garden that he was known for and loved sharing it with the community which he loved so much. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the church where a Memorial Service will be held on Friday, April 6, 2018, 11:00 am at the Decatur Presbyterian Church, 205 Sycamore St. Decatur, GA: Reception to follow. The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 5, 2018 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at A. S. Turner & Sons, Decatur, GA.
