William Montgomery Smith

December 21, 1936 — March 14, 2021

William Montgomery “Monte” Smith, December 21, 1936 – March 14, 2021. Monte Smith, son of Ila and Marion Smith, was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and was a lifelong resident of the Atlanta metro area. He is to be interred at Westview Cemetery with services for immediate family. Monte is survived by his wife, Martha Smith, son Matthew Smith (Amy Lynn Hess), grandchildren Dorian and Justin Smith, and cousin, Dickie Smith.

Monte graduated from Decatur High School in 1955 and matriculated at Georgia State University, earning Bachelor degrees with majors in transportation and mathematics, and graduating with a Master of Arts in Teaching in 1973. He taught mathematics, geometry, and algebra at Lakeshore High School and Roswell High School. He retired in 1992.

Most notably, Monte was an active member of Haygood Memorial United Methodist Church since joining in 1972. He participated as a Sunday school leader, evangelical chair, softball scorekeeper and statistician, yearly Christmas tree sales coordinator, and Habitat for Humanity coordinator. He was warm and welcoming to all new members, often greeting people at the doors to the church on Sunday mornings.

Monte loved baseball and Gunsmoke, playing chess, and travel. He traveled to Japan as a young man, would travel hours to hear his favorite preachers speak, and he loved beach vacations later in life. He was especially good at being the master of ceremonies for family beach trip talent shows, demonstrating his own talent for both kindness and humor.

Monte will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend.

In lieu of flowers and gifts, donations can be made to Haygood Memorial United Methodist Church.
