Bill Barber (William Thomas Barber, Sr.) passed away peacefully February 25, 2014. He was a native Atlantan and a 1943 graduate of Tech High. Upon graduation, Bill entered the US Navy and served aboard the USS Copahee (CVE-12) in the Pacific Theater. He was involved in the invasion of Saipan. After the war he met and married his wife Carolyn of 66 years. In 1950, Bill opened Southern Fisheries and operated it for the next three decades. Afterwards, he worked in transportation for the DeKalb County Schools and Georgia Perimeter College. Always involved in the life of his children, Bill held many offices in the DeKalb Memorial Athletic Association, and coached youth sports for over twenty years. He was active in athletic booster clubs for East Atlanta and Southwest DeKalb High Schools. Mt. Zion UMC was his home for his deep Christian faith. He was predeceased by his son Mike, as well as his parents and brothers. Bill is survived by his wife Carolyn Andrews Barber, sons Tommy Barber (Linda), Pat Barber (Wendy) and daughter Carol Hammett (Greg). Grandchildren Scott Barber (Emily) and Amy Barber (Craig LaRue), Jack Barber, Billy Barber, Michael Hammett and Kaylee Hammett (Travis Beale). Step Grandchildren Preston Carlson (Greer), Grant Carlson (Sarah), Megan Lock and Allie Lock. Great Grandchildren: Cecilia Barber, Valerie Beale and Harrison Carlson along with many nieces and nephews. Bill loved his Lord, his wife and his family. Funeral services will be held in the chapel of A. S. Turner and Sons on Friday, February 28th at 11:00 AM with Rev. Clair Yoder officiating. Interment, Crest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) from 6-8 pm at A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
