William Wright St. Clair of Decatur, Georgia, died May 6, 2007 in the care of Hospice Atlanta, just three weeks following the celebration of his 90th birthday with his beloved family of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was born April 13, 1917 in Indiana, Pennsylvania, the son of John G. and Edna W. St. Clair. He graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania in 1939 and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Bill St. Clair moved to Atlanta shortly after his college graduation and was engaged in a floor covering business. He was married to the former Lavinia Scott of Milledgeville, Georgia, until her early death in 1955. Mr. St. Clair served two years in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was discharged with honors at the conclusion of the war with the rank of Lieutenant. He returned to Atlanta and re-engaged in the floor covering industry, and in 1957, he founded St. Clair Carpets, Inc. which he served as President and owner until he sold the company in the early 1990's. He was also married to Doris Dunn Hills St. Clair for forty two years until her death in 1998. Mr. St. Clair was a life member of Druid Hills Golf Club, Kiwanis Club of Decatur and several professional organizations. He and his family vacationed together for many years at Sea Island, Georgia, where he thoroughly enjoyed rounds of golf with friends and family. Mr. St. Clair served as an elder and a deacon of First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta where he was a member for over 68 years. He served as president of the church's Berean Bible Class and as Chairman of the Annual Giving Campaign. Bill St. Clair is survived by his daughter, Joanne St. Clair Campbell and her husband James P. Campbell of Monroe, Georgia; and stepsons, Richard A. Hills (Jackie) of Highlands North, Carolina, and Thomas D. Hills (Wally) of Atlanta, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra St. Clair Franklin (Mrs. Samuel O. Franklin, III) of Nashville, Tennessee, and his brother, J. Wilson St. Clair of Schenectady, New, York and Potomac, Maryland. He is also survived by his 11 grandchildren: James Pierce Campbell (Heather), Clair Campbell Griffin (Gordon), Stephanie Campbell Patat (Michael), William Scott Franklin (Lane), Stephen Wright Franklin (Leslie), Kathryn Hills Dennis (Brown), Mary Margaret Hills Schulte (Kevin), Shannon Hills Hirsh (Max), Richard T. Hills (Missy), Laura F. Jackson, and Christopher D. Jackson (Delphina) and by his 14 great grandchildren. The family wishes to thank especially Mr. St. Clair's faithful caregiver, Jessica Castellanos. Graveside services for the family will be held Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at 11:00 at Decatur Cemetery, Dr. George Wirth officiating. The family requests that any contributions be made to First Presbyterian Church, 1328 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, Ga. 30309 or to Hospice Atlanta, 1244 Park Vista Drive, Atlanta, Ga. 30319.
