Wilma Stone

July 14, 1928 — July 1, 2016

Wilma Ruth Norton Stone, 87, a beloved resident of Arbor Terrace Decatur (Georgia) died on July 1st, 2016 at Halcyon Hospice in Sandy Springs, Georgia. Born on July 14th, 1928, in Cherokee County, Alabama to Isaac and Audrey Norton, Wilma attended Spring Garden (Alabama) Schools, Jacksonville State Teachers College and Tulane University. Ms. Stone spent her early years in New Orleans, LA and El Paso, TX. Following her passion for the preservation and restoration of historically significant buildings and artifacts, in 1970, Wilma moved to Atlanta and established "The Wrecking Bar," which became Atlanta's iconic architectural antique business. She traveled extensively in support of her business and thereby gained international respect for her expertise in this field. She took pride that she rescued the Wrecking Bar building from demolition and that she was able to purchase and thus prevent her historically important Neel Reid home from being subdivided into apartments. For more than three decades, Wilma owned and served as president of the Wrecking Bar. That building, now protected by the National Register of Historic Places, continues to serve the community as the popular Wrecking Bar Brew Pub. Wilma had other passions. She was a long time member of Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church. She served as a trustee and patron of The Atlanta Boy Choir with which she traveled all over the world. She supported the Atlanta History Center, the Atlanta Symphony and the Atlanta Opera. She enjoyed, cooking, gardening and entertaining. Wilma Stone had a strong Steel Magnolia/Designing Women aura about her. She was well known to many and considered special to everyone who knew her. Whereas, she was truly a self-made, highly intelligent, strong and successful business person, she was also warm, loving, generous, caring and kind. She was deeply loved and is greatly missed. Wilma loved her family deeply. She is survived by her nieces, Grace Little Webb (Larry) and Donna Little (Robert); special friends considered as family, Paul Blackstone and Bob Slavin, great nieces and nephews, Lori Harnish, Athena Little (Danny Tollison) Angela Marsh, Larry Webb, Jr. (Laura), Tim Webb (Amy), Luke Little, and Jonathan Little. Great-great nieces and nephews, Kyle Webb, Bree Gillis, Paige Webb, Gavin Marsh, Carolina Gillis, Garret Marsh, Jesse Tollison, Caleb Tollison, Jon Isaac Webb, Silas Webb, and Lukas Webb. In addition to her parents, Wilma was preceded in death by her brother, Lotus Norton (Maxine), sister, Helen Norton Little (Robert), nephew, Robert Little, great-nephew, Robert Benjamin Little. A special thank you to the wonderful staff at Arbor Terrace Decatur and especially to the med techs and CNAs who provided such loving care to Wilma.
