Winifred Mavis Carroll (née Gill) died in DeKalb Medical Center on June 30, 2018 in Decatur, GA at the age of 78.
Mavis, as she preferred to be known as, is survived by her husband, Robert Carroll of Clarkston, GA; children, Richard Carroll of Queens, NY and Michael Carroll of Clarkston, GA; daughter-in-law, Cayra Carroll of Queens, NY; grandchildren, Sophia Carroll of Queens, NY and Bailey and Michael Carroll Jr. of Kissimmee, FL. She is preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Gladys Gill of Bronx, NY who were originally from Barbados, West Indies and by her aunt, Thelma Weeks of Bronx, NY.
Mavis was born on August 26, 1939 in Bronx, NY to Kenneth and Gladys Gill. She graduated from Walton High School in 1957. She married Robert Carroll, her grade school sweetheart, a carpenter by trade on June 27, 1964. After a period of time, the couple welcomed 2 sons into their home and Mavis set about teaching them to be responsible christian men. After moving to East Elmhurst, NY, Mavis began working for Bristol Myers Squibb as an Administrative Assistant. Her children remember her as a kind and gentle mother who encouraged them to pursue their goals.
Mavis was an avid reader and acquired an extensive library, having been the church librarian at First Baptist Church of Flushing where she was a member for over 25 years. She was an active and dedicated member of the church where she was a beloved Sunday School teacher and church choir member. Mavis was also an integral part of the Prayer Team, as she believed in the power of prayer for wisdom and discernment in every aspect of her life. She also enjoyed writing and listening to christian hymns and gospel music. Mavis was also a member of Cross Community Baptist Church in Queens Village, NY.
After retirement, Bob and Mavis moved to Clarkston, GA in 2005 and began attending Peachtree City Church for a few years before becoming members at First Baptist Church Atlanta until present time.
The viewing will be held on July 7, 2018 from 1PM - 3PM at A.S. Turner and Sons with a reception to follow. The homegoing service is scheduled for July 8, 2018 from 2PM - 4PM. Pastor Paul Diamond will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mavis’ life.
