Zelma Thornton Burton of Decatur died Sunday, January 15, 2006. She was born on November 27, 1916 in Elberton, GA. She and her three brothers were raised by her mother, Naomi Thornton. Zelma married Floyd Amos Burton on Christmas Eve in 1933 and they were married for over 50 years before Amos? death in 1985. Zelma and Amos spent most of their lives in Atlanta, particularly on Grant Street, where they were members of Grant Park Baptist Church. Amos was a Deacon and Zelma worked in the church nursery. They moved to Page Avenue in Atlanta in 1966 and became active members of Druid Hills Baptist Church. Zelma and Amos both took a loving interest in their children?s activities, such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Parents Teacher?s Association, piano lessons, cheerleading, track and field, and basketball. Zelma was the epitome of a lovely Christian woman. She guided her family in faithfulness and spirituality and encouraged them throughout every facet of their lives. Guests were always welcome and her many, many friends loved her and she loved them. She is survived by three children, Melvin, Karen and Keith ; seven grandchildren, Scot, Michele, Dwayne, Kim, Chad, Angie, and Ryan; eight great grandchildren, Katie, Avery, Valeska, Oliver, Dani, Payton, Tre? and Sarah; and three step great great grandchildren, Eathan, Bodie and Winter. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 18th at Druid Hills Baptist Church, Rev. Jonathan Spencer and Dr. Harold Zwald officiating. Burial will be at Westview Cemetery.
