Zena Costa Brown, 96, of Atlanta, passed away December 11, 2013. Mrs. Brown was born in Athens, Georgia, October 1, 1917. Her parents were the late Michael John and Eleanora Costa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Lester A. Brown, an internationally known Otolaryngologist, her sister, Margaret Costa Baird, and brother Lawrence J. Costa. She is survived by her brother, Michael J. "Skip" Costa, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Brown graduated from Athens High School and the University of Georgia, with a BS degree in Home Economics, in 1938. She taught Home Economics at Robert E. Lee Institute in Thomaston GA for two years. She worked for the Atlanta Gas Light Company for over 30 years as a home economist, rising to Coordinator of Consumer Information and Education at retirement. In retirement, Mrs. Brown traveled extensively. Throughout her life, she remained active in professional organizations including the UGA Alumni Association and the UGA College of Family and Consumer Sciences. She created two endowments supporting International Study opportunities and Scholarship. This insures her legacy will be alive for future generations at her beloved Alma Mater. She was an active member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. In Lieu of flowers, please direct charitable donations to The UGA Foundation, 394 S. Milledge Ave, Athens GA 30602 and designate the Zena Costa Brown International Study Fund.
